Iranian police have arrested eight people in a new crackdown on women who post images of themselves online without their hair covered, state media reported Monday, part of a larger cultural struggle in the Islamic Republic over the country's future.
The arrests are part of a wider crackdown on artists, poets, journalists, bloggers and activists.
The arrests and harsh sentences handed down signal that hard-liners in the police and judiciary, who were unable to stop the accord and fear looser social norms will weaken their power on the public.

Iran: Shocking suicide of 15-year-old girl in Tabriz

On Saturday, April 9^th a young 15-year-old girl from the city of Tabriz, northwest Iran, threw herself off the 10^th level of a building. She died on the spot.

The motive behind this young girl’s suicide remains unknown. Images of this young woman before and after her suicide raised waves of anger against the mullahs on the Internet.

Unfortunately, suicides are becoming a daily issue in Iran under the mullahs’ rule. Social and economic pressures, unemployment, skyrocketing prices, corruption, drug addiction and social distress, pressures imposed by the repressive police and their meddling in all aspects of people’s daily lives has led to increasing suicide numbers across the country.

Rouhie Safajoo, a student banned from Iranian universities because of her Baha’i faith and arrested for her online activism, was released on March 27, 2016 on 500 million rials (about $16,500 USD) bail, nearly three weeks after her arrest.

“We are very happy Rouhie is free,” her sister, Maryam Safajoo, told the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran. “But the real story is that for the past 37 years [since Iran’s 1979 revolution], Baha’i students have been denied the right to attend university.”

Many years ago, back in third grade I read a short story titled “The Last Lesson” from a story collection titled “Last Monday” by a French Author who I do not recall the name. Whole book is about the author’s first hand experience living under Nazis role during the German invasion of France as a kid. “The Last Lesson” describes in details the last French class before the enforcement of Nazi law of ban on teaching French in French schools. This young man described with honesty and in moving words, his emotions, his sorrow and his chagrin for not being able to freely use his mother tongue and praise his national culture. After close to four decades I can still remember how I was affected and cried as I was reading the story.

23 Iranian Turks, including three women were sentenced to jail and torture for against a TV program insulting the Turks, to prison and flogging.

 People of cities in the Turkish speaking part of Iran (Azerbaijan) _ such as Tabriz, Ardebil, Zanjan, Khoy, Oroomieh, and Meshkin Shahr staged protests last November against a state run TV program insulting the Turk community. The protest turned violent as government suppressive forces attacked the crowds. Many protestors were arrested.

A court in Tabriz charged the protestors for as “disrupting public order through participation in illegal gatherings.” and sentenced 23 of them to one year suspended jail and 74 lashes each. 

Iran: 4 women commit suicide in span of few days

A woman working for section 13 of Tehran municipality threw herself off the second floor of the municipality building on Wednesday, March 1^st, and unfortunately lost her life.

“This woman, identified with the initial ‘H’, threw herself off the second floor at 7:30 pm at Wednesday, March 2^nd, after exiting her manager’s room. The young woman, whose husband also works in the municipality, committed suicide due to problems at work,” state-run media reported.

Furthermore, on Tuesday, March 1^st, three single sisters in one home in Tehran’s Nezam Abad district committed suicide by opening a gas hose. They unfortunately lost their lives.

Last week two women and one man in the cities of Tehran, Minudasht and Saghez committed suicide and unfortunately lost their lives. The increasing number of suicides in Iran under the mullahs’ rule is the result of poverty, unemployment and oppression, especially amongst women.

“There are many marriages of the girls under 10 years of age”

 Speaking to Iran’s ISNA state news agency, Molaverdi, President Rouhani’s deputy for women, confessed, “There is a worrying number of girls who have got married before getting to their legal age. We have even seen girls ‘marriage before they become 10”.
