Celebrity Leonardo Di Caprio, the
famous movie star and an environment activist has shown his concern for dryness
of the lake Oroomieh in Iran. He wrote in his
Instagram,” Lake Oroomieh once was the largest salt lake in the Middle
East and the sixth largest salt lake in the whole world , but now unfortunately
only %5 of its water is remained.
Lengthy moments of hope that Mullahs
of Iran may change their attitude after the final nuclear deal, have made some
western politicians avert their eyes from the happenings inside Iran. In this
way Mr. Di Caprio’s attention to one of the serious problems of Iranian people
deserves appreciation. Much of Iran’s natural resources, which existed for
years, have now dried. There is no natural cause for the dryness of lakes and
rivers or any other water resources In Iran.
Mullahs plundering policies have
ruined many Iran’s natural life as well as its industries. Building illegal dams
and deep wells to steal water for their private farms or even selling the water
from this or other lakes and rivers have been the main cause for the draught.
This inhuman policy does not limit itself to Lake Oroomieh.
On Friday May 13th citizens of the Iranian
city of Ahwaz, south western Iran, formed a human chain to protest the
government for diverting Karoon, Iran’s largest river. This wasn’t their first
protest. In an earlier gathering on April 21st one of the banners held by the
demonstrators read, “Don’t let Karoon become Lake Oroomieh and die”.
Nevertheless, Iranian regime’s officials, instead of acknowledging the
justified demand of people, sent the security forces to break up the
demonstration and to beat and arrest them. A similar demonstration was held
earlier on November 27th for the same cause. 10,000 locals of Ahvaz rallied on
Thursday, September 4th, to protest transferring the waters of Karoon River.
