A
resolution presented by 39 UN
members to extend “the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the situation of
human rights” in Iran for “a further period of one year” was ratified by UN
human Rights Council on Wednesday March 20. Mr. Ahmad Shaheed resides at his position as
the Special Rapporteur on Iran for the 6th consecutive period.
This
was achieved at the same time that Mullahs regime and their international
supporters tried hard not to let the re-election of Ahmad Shaheed as the
special rapporteur happen. The endeavors of Mr. Shaheed in exposing the
flagrant violations of human rights in Iran and the accuracy of his reports
made the United Nations to renew him at this position for another year.
The
re appointment of Mr. Shaheed heated up Mullahs in the Iranian government who
called this event as a “hostile political move” against them. Despite frequent
calls by the United Nations the government of Iran never allowed the special
rapporteur to go to Iran to visit its gruesome prisons.
Just recently Ahmad Shaheed and five
other UN special rapporteurs on human rights matters issued a joint statement
expressing serious concerns over the arrest of journalists in Iran and heavy
sentences issued against them.
Undoubtedly,
the people of Iran, as the first victims of Mullahs repression, regard the
reappointment of Mr. Ahmad Shaheed as a good gesture and insist for promptness
against Mullahs to stop torture and executions. Since President Rouhani came to
office, the number of executions in Iran has had an ascendant surge and has
already passed 2300.
