Iranian regime supreme leader Ali Khamenei used
his last chance before Iran’s elections farce lashing out at Expediency Council
chief Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and unprecedentedly terming him as “enemy of the
revolution”. Khamenei once again referred to the “penetration” crisis and said,
“One has to repent when the enemy (a reference to Rafsanjani and
Iranian regime president Hassan Rouhani) praises you.”
What was the reason behind such an attack, just
days before the elections?
Answer:
1. In the recent weeks and months leading to the
elections Rafsanjani used every opportunity and delivered severe blows to
Khamenei, forcing the supreme leader himself to use the last chance before the
elections to even the odds.
2. If Khamenei failed to strike back hard at his
rival at this last opportunity he would have fallen behind in the fight for
hegemony. By dubbing Rafsanjani as anti-revolution he attempted to block any
advances made in the future by Rafsanjani. He termed him as anti-revolution
alongside “penetration” to have a more open hand in the future to stage future
attacks.
3. Rafsanjani had said, “The very individual you
name as radical, that is me, and I am actually the head of this current, and I
have no intention to back down. As Ahmad Khatami said, let’s fight this to the
end.” As a result a decisive war for the post-election era began already.
Conclusion
The issue at hand in these sham elections is
nothing but a major dispute between the two leading heads of factions, which
will result in deepening divides for the Iranian regime. This war will not
defuse with these sham elections. In fact, it will enter much wider
perspectives and continue to expand more than ever before. However, both
factions of this regime are miscalculating on one matter: the hegemony issue
cannot be resolved inside the regime. At a time when the ruling establishment
is weakening each day, it is the people who will be determining their fate, and
placing their votes for freedom into the “overthrow” ballot box.
