Tehran Book Exhibition
Ali Fereidooni, an official in
charge of the Tehran Book Exhibition from Iran’s Ministry of Guidance, admitted
to the practice of censorship in the book showcase.
“To this day a number of books
have been rounded up as they have not met the context standards of the
exhibition,” he said on Friday, May 6th in an interview with the
state ILNA news agency. “These books, in the Arabic, religious and foreign
language books contained improper images.”
“Supervision over the books in
the international section of the exhibition had begun in three different phases
and even prior to the exhibition. To this day there have been cases both in the
Arabic and foreign language section where our supervisors have issued serious
warnings,” he added.
Ali Jannati, the Minister of
Guidance in President Hassan Rouhani’s cabinet also referred to censorship of
books in this exhibition.
“It is not the case that the
books brought into the exhibition are not checked beforehand. Some of the
foreign books have been rounded up from the Tehran Book Exhibition,” he added.
It is worth noting that informed
sources have said, “The rounded Arabic books are amongst the most important
Sunni reference books, and the mullahs’ regime is essentially against the
publication of religious ideas.”
