Iran: 1/4th of population suffering from mental disorders


Shocking mental disorder numbers, 1,200 disabled people in one town

23% of Iran’s population is suffering from mental disorders
More than 23% of Iran’s population is suffering from mental disorders, said director general of the Psychological Health Bureau in Iran’s Health Ministry.
“Social disorders today is one of the most important health problems faced in our society, and currently based on pathologic reports around 23.6% of the country’s population is suffering from some type of mental disorder,” said Ahmad Hajebi, taking part in inaugurating ceremony of a mental center in the city of Ghouchan.
“… Pathology reviews conducted amongst the population from 15 to 64 years of age in this country shows around 12.5 million are suffering from such problems. In the first year of plans to tackle this problem only 4.2 million people were able to take advantage of the services provided,” he added, referring to the spread of mental disorders.


1,200 disabled individuals in one town alone
Governor of the town of Khalkhal in East Azerbaijan Province (northeast Iran) said in this town alone 1,200 people are seriously disabled.
“350 such individuals have no medical care and are seeking to receive medical care and the services provided by this entity,” he added.

“In addition to disabled people and the deprived, senior citizens and those who can no longer word in this town’s villages are also in need of this entity’s support, Ali Nazari continued.
