Letter of political prisoner Arzhang Davoudi to EU foreign policy chief before
her visit
Her Excellency
Madame Federica Mogherini
European Union
High Representative for Foreign Affairs
I am one of
the most senior political prisoners in Iran who has always respected and
acknowledged the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and related covenants,
and from day one I have based my political activities on these frameworks.
However, I have always faced charges of peacefully struggling for freedom,
democracy, rights and justice.
From 2003 to this day I have spent most of my
time behind bars in exile in various medieval dungeons in Iran. I would like to
inform you that although we Iranians have the utmost respects for our guests,
especially ladies, since the rulers of this forged government have no respect
for the lives of human beings, let alone the individual and social rights of citizens,
I believe a visit by each and every senior official of an advanced country,
including your new visit as the official leading the European Union’s foreign
policy, only further damages the establishment of freedom and democracy in
Iran. In fact, such visits lead to increasing pains for political and
non-political prisoners alike, especially the emotions of the families of
political activists. These visits lead to the ruling system becoming more
vicious and the status quo becoming even more catastrophic.
I would like
to remind you that in despotic countries where its leader ridicule civil
freedoms and civilians’ rights, and refuse to accept their international
responsibilities, the tyrannical rulers are never able to resolve
domestic problems and in fact, they are increasingly provoking dilemmas inside
their borders and beyond. The very existence of these states are the main
problems. Despite all this, we are expecting from Her Excellency to not neglect
in your meetings with Iran’s officials any effort to prevent flagrant human
rights violations, especially those under cruelty and their families. These
issues need your special attention.
