Ramadan Ahmed Kamal, a political prisoner from the city
of Kubani in Syria, held in Iran
Ramadan Ahmed Kamal, a political prisoner from
Syrian detained in Gohardasht Prison of Karaj, west of Iran, is on hunger
strike protesting authorities’ refusal to provide him any medical care.
It is worth noting that this political prisoner
is from the city of Kubani in Syria. Back in 2008 he had mistakenly entered
Iran with three Kurdistan Workers Party members and was arrested by Iranian
border guards.
This Kurdish prisoner was sentenced to death for
his membership in the PKK. However, Iran’s Supreme Court decreased his sentence
to 10 years behind bars.
Amnesty International issued a statement on 26
January 2016 calling for “Urgent Action” on the conditions of this Kurdish
political prisoner.
Prior to this Kamal had written a letter to Dr.
Ahmed Shaheed, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Iran,
reporting how he had been beaten by prison guards in Gohardasht Prison.
