Iran’s
upcoming elections, on February 26th, will be one of the most
important turning points ever for the rulers in Iran. Despite the Iranian
people’s indifference, but the elections is the scene of severe dogfights
between the factions within the government. The Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei,
although is in a weaker position than he was last year but tries to maintain
his power. His power, however, is challenged by Rafsanjani and Rouhani, the
main figures on the other side.
Apart
from the Parliament, members of the “Assembly of Experts” will be decided in
the Feb.26th elections. The importance about this assembly is that it can
decide about the fate of the Supreme Leader. Multiple crisis including
retreating from ambitions of acquiring nuclear weapons, bankrupt economy and
above all the threat of another mass uprising have weakened the regime as a
whole and Khamenei in particular. This has flamed the fight between the two main
rivals to go for having an upper hand in the “Assembly of Experts” association which
will be the start of the new fight for the system’s leadership.
Among
the hundreds “expunged disqualified candidates” from the list, the most important of
all was Hassan Khomeini, the grandson of the founder of the regime and a foe
for Khamenei. Many believe Hassan Khomeini, the young character,
is a candidate for the position of “Supreme Leader” in case Khamenei dies. So
far Khomeini has been disqualified by the “Council of Guardians” institution which
is essentially under the influence of Khamenei.
The
main factor in deciding who stays in the fight or not, and who gets more share
of power, is the great fear that the detonated grenade, called the people of
Iran, explodes, taking all the Ayatollahs, no matter of which side, back to the
garbage can of Iran history.
