As the United Nations
Commission on the Rights of the Child was reviewing continuing executions of
juveniles in Iran, along with this regime’s other measures and inhumane laws
against children in Iran, especially against Iranian girls, the dictatorship
ruling Iran rallied its elements in the U.N. to prevent this commission from
issuing a statement condemning Tehran. However, these efforts were futile and
commission experts condemned Iran for vicious execution of juveniles and violating
international standards of children’s rights.
The Convention of the Rights of the Child was
adopted in 1982 and became binding in 1990. 99% of all countries across the
globe have passed and accepted its terms.
Therefore, the U.N. has specifically called on
Iran to respond on the issue of executing youths and juveniles under the age of
18 at the time of their crime, and to act based on international standards. It
has been emphasized to Tehran that the age of criminal responsibility in Iran
is very discriminatory, especially for girls, and the fact that this age is set
at 9 for girls and 15 for boys is extremely repulsive. Furthermore, the
Commission strongly condemned forcing girls at a very young age into arbitrary marriages.
