Iran: UN must urgently see into status of jailed prominent cleric

Ayatollah Kazemeini Borujerdi

Tehran – Representatives of Ayatollah Kazemeini Borujerdi, a political prisoner and cleric opposing the religious dictatorship ruling Iran who has been behind bars since October 2006, wrote a letter to the United Nations Secretary-General seeking urgent attention to Mr. Kazemeini Borujerdi’s status in Tehran’s notorious Evin Prison.
The text of this letter reads:

His Excellency Dr. Ban Ki-moon, United Nations Secretary-General
His Excellency Dr. Ahmed Shaheed, United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Iran
Human rights advocates and organizations

Mr. Seyed Hossein Kazemeini Borujerdi, a 57-year-old religious theoretician who has been in prison for nearly a decade since October 2006 under continuing tortures, is now suffering from various illnesses and his life is in grave danger. He is in dire need of a physician, medicine and medical care.
In addition to his previous illnesses, since 20 January 2016 to this day it has been over two weeks that Mr. Borujerdi has seen his illnesses intensify. However, to this day he has not received any medical care, medicine or treatment. According to reports received from inside prison and remarks made by his family members, recently Mr. Borujerdi has for unknown reasons been continuously suffering from dizziness, severe vomiting and fainting on various occasions. It is worth noting the prison clinic lacks the adequate equipment and supplies to diagnose the illness of this prisoner of conscience and other inmates. On the other hand, officials of the special clerics court’s intelligence branch are preventing his transfer to a hospital outside of the prison to allow physicians identify his illness and place him under medical care.
In such critical conditions, we the representatives of Mr. Kazemeini Borujerdi, would like to inform you that the health conditions of this prisoner of conscience is currently very vague. This represents a violation of Iran’s international obligations in human rights due to not providing adequate medical care for this individual. It is worth noting that this trend is motivated and deliberately imposed on this ill prisoner, and considered a type of white torture that to this day has led to the death of dozens of inmates in prisons across Iran.
Therefore, we are urgently asking you as the highest officials in human rights, and all awaken consciences to play special attention to the medical care and health of this prisoner of conscience, and finally provide for his transfer to an equipped hospital after ten years.

Representatives of Mr. Kazemeini Borujerdi
